BIRT Designer is a complete reporting system that integrates with your application to produce rich reports for the web and PDF. BIRT is a very solid solution for reporting, including features such as a report layout editor, data access and scripting.

Installing this plugin

This plugin is not shipped in any distribution. You must manually install it on an EasyEclipse distribution.

The dependent plugins Eclipse Java Development Tools and Eclipse Data Tools must be present in the EasyEclipse distribution you use, or must be installed separately.

Getting started

Help is available for this plugin, in the Help > Help Contents menu in EasyEclipse.

BIRT's help include several tutorials. Open the help with Help > Help Content and select BIRT Report Developer Guide > Field Guide to BIRT > Learning the Basics > Building a simple listing report.

Note that to take advantage of some advanced functionalities, you will need to install more plugins:

Plugin Development Environment plugin, to debug reports visually,
Eclipse Web tools editors plugin, to integrate with WTP.

Tests

(Notes that tests are only displayed if the page is served statically)

Passing:

Run the first part of the tutorial mentioned in the getting-started:
        - File -> New -> Project, Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools -> Report Project, enter a Project Name, Finish.
        - Click OK to switch to "Report Design" perspective.
        - right-click on project, "New -> Report", select project root as parent, Next, select "My First Report", Finish
        - open "Data Explorer" view: select "Windows -> Show View -> Data Explorer"
        - in Data Explorer view, right-click on "Data sources", select "New Data Source", select "Classic Models Inc. Sample Database", hit Next, Finish
        - in Data Explorer view, right-click on "Data sets", select "New Data Set", hit Next, put "select * from CLASSICMODELS.CUSTOMERS" as query, hit Finish. In dialog "Edit Data Set" hit OK.
        - in Palette, drag \'Table\' to the layout, select \'Data Set\' in Data Set drop-down, leave \'number of columns\' to 3, \'number of rows\' to 1, OK
        - in Data Explorer, expand tree under Data Sets, drag \'CUSTOMERNAME\' to field marked as \'Detail row\' (second line, first row) of the table in layout editor
        - in layout editor, select Preview tab. Should show a bunch of data.

Passing:

        - run previous test
        - File > View report > View report as PDF
        - should show same data as the Preview tab

Failing:

	There are "optional" dependencies. We should have tests for them. At least they are documented in the getting-started.
